The Tutor for Graduates and Senior Tutor are available (as are, of course, College Advisors) to discuss such matters as funding, or interpreting the often complex University regulations. When application forms (e.g. for transfer of status, submission of theses, etc.) need action by the College, these should be sent directly to the Graduate Administrator ( [email protected]). Wadham College was founded by Nicholas and Dorothy Wadham duringthe reign of King James I. Nicholas died in 1609 leaving his fortune to endow a College at Oxford. These intentions were translated into reality by his widow, Dorothy, a formidable lady of 75 who had the College ready for opening within four years. A letter from the College Doctors containing useful information about the National Health Service and giving further details of how to register with them is available in the Documents Library, along with a welcome video outlining their services. Please also pay attention to the information provided in the Documents Library in relation to vaccinations that students are expected to have had prior to commencing their studies. If your work before, or during, a University examination is affected by illness or other exceptional circumstance, the Senior Tutor or Academic Administrator should be informed immediately so that the examiners can be notified in good time. A medical certificate, signed by a College Doctor, is required. The Wadham community was honoured to welcome members of the Doo family for the opening celebration of our new Undergraduate Centre on 10 November 2022.

As is the case for UK residents, you may need to pay for dental and optical treatment as well as medicine prescribed by the doctor and collected from a pharmacy. The NHS also charges for particularly expensive discretionary treatments. The Health Protection Agency recommends that young adults are protected against mumps by receiving two doses of MMR vaccine, which gives 90% protection. If you have not had both the normal doses of MMR vaccine, it is strongly recommended that you are immunised before coming to Oxford, as there have been clusters of cases of mumps and measles at various universities. MMR can be given at the same time as the Meningitis ACWY vaccine. It is better to be immunised before arrival (because of the risk of transmission during events at the start of term) but it will be possible to have the vaccine later, once you have registered with the College GPs at 19 Beaumont Street. Students who require a visa (those not from the UK or Ireland, or those who do not hold indefinite leave to remain or pre-settled or settled status) and are studying full time for more than 6 months will need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) as part of a visa application to access the NHS services free of charge. Family members coming to the UK as dependents will also need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge to be eligible for the same access to the NHS. Students are expected to maintain their accommodation in a manner that prevents the occurrence of pests. Students should immediately report any signs of pests to the Head of Housekeeping or LodgeThe Tutorial Board is a committee of the Warden and all Tutorial Fellows and College Officers, and is responsible to Governing Body for all the teaching functions of the College. SU representatives are invited to unreserved sections of meetings. Where possible planned maintenance is carried out in the vacations. Any complaints about defects not being rectified should be reported to the Maintenance Operations Manager in the first instance. In common with many Oxford colleges, Wadham has produced a wide range of graduates in the fields of economics, history, law, physiology, medicine, management, humanities, mathematics, science, technology, media, philosophy, poetry, politics and religion who have contributed significantly to public life. You can live in college for your first year and one other, usually your last, and all rooms cost the same amount. Third years do a random ballot for priority choosing rooms whilst first years are more randomly allocated but you fill out a questionnaire stating some preferences beforehand. Some college rooms have a kitchen and there is the main JCR kitchen that everyone can use. A few of the rooms have en-suites but usually a bathroom is shared between two to four people. In 1974, after more than three and a half centuries as a men-only institution, Wadham was among the first group of five all-male colleges at Oxford to admit women as full members, the others being Brasenose, Jesus College, Hertford and St Catherine's. [5] Wadham had amongst its fellowship the notable poet John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester (1647–1680) who earned a reputation as the most famous womanizer of his era. [42] [43] The 2004 movie The Libertine, which starred Johnny Depp as Rochester, coincidentally also starred Rosamund Pike, a Wadham alumna. It is important that all students who have received extra time in previous examinations, for example for dyslexia, advise the Academic Administrator ( [email protected]) in their first term: an application has to be made for similar dispensation in any University examination. Whether you are a fresher or a returning student, I want to welcome you warmly to Wadham. This celebrated College is a tolerant, inclusive community with distinguished scholarship and learning at its heart. We expect you to study hard during your time with us and to take all the opportunities that Wadham will certainly offer as you broaden your knowledge and stretch your minds over the next years. Each one of you is here because we believe that you have the ability and the potential to benefit from the array of intellectual possibilities that the College offers to its undergraduate and graduate members.

Following your last night of Vacation Residence, please vacate and clear your room by 10am.The main building was erected in a single building operation in 1610–1613. The architect, William Arnold, was also responsible for Montacute House and Dunster Castle in Somerset, and was involved in the building of Cranborne Manor, Dorset for Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury, James I's Lord Treasurer. The style of the building is a fairly traditional Oxford Gothic, modified by classical decorative detail, most notably the 'frontispiece' framing statues of James I and the Founders immediately facing visitors as they enter the college. Classical, too, is the over-powering emphasis on symmetry. The central quadrangle was originally gravelled throughout; the present lawn was laid down in 1809. The college was refaced in the 1960s, and much of the front quad has undergone further restoration work.
