Join the generations of families that have laughed along as Frances sings "Jam on biscuits, jam on bread, Jam is the thing I like most, Jam is sticky, jam is sweet, Jam is tasty, jam’s a treat—raspberry, strawberry, gooseberry, I’m very FOND…OF…JAM!

Wallace’s biography, “Garth Williams, American Illustrator: A Life,” the authors discuss Williams’ resentment at the fact that Lillian Hoban appropriated, as he saw it, his original idea to make Frances a badger, not a vole. She prefers to eat the same for dinner that night in lieu of breaded veal cutlets with string beans and baked potatoes. This is a cute animal but one that would be unknown to my Australian students which is why I adore sharing picture books from around the world.Betsy Bird is currently the Collection Development Manager of the Evanston Public Library system and a former Materials Specialist for New York Public Library. Faced with no alternative Frances comes to the conclusion that although she loves bread and jam she does not want to eat it at every meal. The posthumously published story by the author of Harriet the Spy exhibits an even gentler touch than do her other picture books ( I Am Five , etc. I remembered a teacher long ago told me her favourite picture book was Bread and Jam for Frances so I decided to explore this classic book (1964) this week.

While I thing the moral of the story is a good one, I believe the story could have been shortened quite a bit and still convey the same message as effectively. original sound resembling The Flower Duet sung over a twisted union of classical music and gothic rock.Bread and Jam” may be my favorite book in the Frances series, perhaps because I have prepared so many school lunches. Mother and Father are patient, wise and kind and the language of the story is beautifully crafted with gentle touches of humour.
