About this deal

In a way, it’s difficult to explain why Libertalia: Winds of Galecrest works as well as it does and sometimes that’s the secret to a game’s success.

There are not only more characters, but also more ways to play with the treasures and the Reputation Track is easily the best part of the revised ruleset for me. e. reputation) and out-thinking your opponents, but the fact that the game’s mechanisms are so simple yet so complex is an intriguing aspect of the actual game i If matching characters are played, the player with the higher reputation (based on the reputation track) places their character to the right. The game is played over three voyages, each of which has an increasing number of days and therefore loot tokens. So should they still take the risk and play the top-ranked Governor even though they will lose a tie? This is a key element of the game since breaking ties in your favor can be the difference between a chest of gold and a cursed relic. Then player’s get a deck of matching cards, a treasure trove scorer (set to zero) and a graveyard in their player colour. Players can never be totally confident that playing the highest-ranking pirate from their hand will get them the best loot token. Solo mode in board games isn’t of interest to us, so we can’t give our opinion of how well it plays.

The component quality is in ship shape between the hefty tokens, solid board, thick loot tiles, well-made score dials, and quality cards. Depending on the distribution, the Automa will then proceed to the second tier designated as average tokens and so on. Luckily, Jamey and his crew at Stonemaier games came along, picked up the rights from the original designer – Paolo Mori – and brought the game up-to-date with new artwork, cards, and some re-jigged mechanisms. The flip side of the board even has a whole new set of loot token effects to increase player interaction.

After all the Daytime powers have triggered, it’s the higher ranked pirates who get first dibs on the loot tokens. Libertalia: Winds of Galecrest is different to other games hitherto published by Jamey Stegmaier’s company though. This progressive asymmetry becomes more and more pronounced with each round as you never play all your cards during a round. One player randomly draws 6 new characters from their deck and all other players again retrieve those same numbered characters to their hands. At the end of each voyage, players activate anchor abilities on both their loot tokens and characters in their ships. There’s pushing and shoving, trying to be first in the line so that you can be the first to take your daytime action, especially if you have a card that affects the loot available. But your opponents will also try to predict what you’re doing, do you think they realize you still have your Collector, if they do, will they hold back the Gunner the entire game just in case?

The Automa will activate any special abilities associated with her crew card, whereas the Pilferer does nothing as a result of his half of the card only depicting a numerical value.I never played the original, but heard great things about it, and I am excited to play this fine-tuned version! On the flip side, the lowest reputation gives the most bonus money, but reducing it further costs you money. And so the decisions go on, like a galleon spinning in an endless whirlpool, until you’ve tried to out-think all the double-think and come to a conclusion. Hutter and Morten Monrad Pedersen at the Automa Factory because spoiler alert: the solo mode that is featured in Libertalia: Winds of Galecrest is bloody amazing!
