About this deal

While LG has hoovered up gaming features left and right, Samsung still has the edge with latency. At 4K I measured latency at 10.1ms and at 120Hz you can expect that to be even lower.

Update 08/02/2021: We retested the peak brightness with the latest firmware, version 1511. It's considerably brighter in real content, as well as most larger scenes, but small highlights aren't as bright as before. During our test runs with the new firmware we encountered issues with overheating, and had to break up our tests and let the TV cool down between each run. It overheated to the point that it started to impact picture quality. We measured HDR brightness before calibration in the 'Movie HDR' Picture Mode with Brightness and Contrast at max, Color Tone set to 'Warm2', Local Dimming on 'High', and all other image processing disabled. The effect is brightness, sharpness and contrast are fed with more information, and watching standard definition content may not initially ‘wow’, until you realise the TV is guessing about 30 million pixels. With that in mind, the results are mightily impressive. One of the big selling points of any 8K TV is how well it handles upscaling. and thankfully the QN900A does a great job of making content look crystal-clear without any artificial smoothing. Take the above image of Alita as an example – it's clean and sharp, yet you can still make out its fine, film-like grain. Whatever’s on the screen, see it in all its incredible glory with Quantum HDR 3000 powered by HDR10+. From gloomy shadows to sun-scorched scenes, watch every brilliant detail come to life from industry-leading HDR brightness. Plus, with Adaptive HDR10+ every frame is optimised to perfection, so the picture you see is as detailed as it is in real-life. Since 8K content is still sparse, give the QN900A 4K and it’s a terrific spectacle. The opening IMAX shot scene of Wonder Woman 1984 is gorgeous: the sun-dappled sands of Themyscira, the azure blue of the sea and greens of a forest stun in terms of their tone and hue. The red, yellow, and blue of the Wonder Woman costume are vibrant, marking Diana apart from the mere mortals around her. Wonder Woman 1984’s setting is full of bright colours, and the QN900A laps it up with enthusiasm.

The brightness changed between our initial measurements for the accelerated longevity test and the two-month update due to an automatic firmware update. An earlier version of this review incorrectly stated that we tested G-SYNC on an RX 6800. The text has been corrected. A press of the home button on your remote will see your favorite apps and sources pop up from the bottom edge of the display in a horiztonal line.

Stellar 8K Performance

Aside from this, Samsung's QN900A Neo QLED 8K is a television that's class-leading when it comes to design. With bezels that have been reduced to the point of nearly non-existent, speaker grills that are only visible from the side, and a minimalist stand that also provides additional functionality, the QN900A's design is what every TV manufacturer should aspire to. Please note: Failure to produce the card and relevant ID means we are unable to release goods on collection.Modern 1080p content, however, looked excellent. Taking into consideration that one FHD pixel is stretched across 16 pixels on an 8K TV, Samsung's AI-powered Neo Quantum Processor 8K chip is necessary to stitch together these additional pixels in a way that's clean and natural looking, without any aliasing or fuzziness to speak of. With the arrival of its QN900A range, Samsung has essentially stepped into a new television category, giving its already high-end 8K displays a rather significant Mini LED upgrade. Because of this, Samsung's Neo QLED 8K lineup doesn't come cheap. And heading the line is Samsung. The South Korean electronics firm has aggressively pushed the format, driving prices down to more agreeable if not always affordable levels. The first thing you'll notice (or maybe not notice) is the TV's nearly non-existent bezel, which has been reduced to less than a millimeter (0.9.mm) – an achievement made possible by a new and exclusive matrixing technology that's said to shrink the space between where the pixels at the edge of the display end and where the bezel begins. Update 08/02/2021: We retested the local dimming feature with the latest firmware, version 1511 and updated the local dimming videos. Local dimming is slightly better than before, as the algorithms seem to spread bright objects across more dimming zones, reducing the appearance of blooming slightly. Overall zone performance hasn't changed, though.

Before buying the Samsung QN900B

Perforated acoustic holes in the top and sides disperse audio, while the Infinity Screen offers edge-to-edge viewing with no distracting bezel. The rear of the TV is uniformly flat, and along with the detachable One Connect module, the QN900A is perfect for wall-mounting. Although we were provided with Samsung's new Q950A soundbar for the purposes of our review, we chose to limit our usage of it in an effort to get a better understanding of the Neo QLED's built-in sound offering.
