Deep-sea species' loss could lead to oceans' collapse, study suggests". EurekAlert! (Press release). 27 December 2007. de Ley P, Blaxter M (2004). Vol.2. Leiden, NL: E.J. Brill. pp.633–653. Question: How long do slug nematodes last? One application will provide around six weeks control of slugs.

Question: Can I eat produce that has been treated with slug nematodes? Yes, just wash your fruit and vegetables in the normal way. Green lacewing larva, Chrysoperla carnea. The adult has a slender pale green body, about 10mm long, with long thread-like antennae and transparent wings with many veins. The adults feed on pollen, nectar and honeydew, the larvae are voracious predators of aphids, other small insects and mites. The females lay white eggs that are raised off the leaf surface on 5-7mm long silk threads. Thislacewing overwinters as adults in sheltered places. Why does the nematode biological control ( Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita) work for some gardeners but not all? Working with collaborators at Liverpool John Moores University we are testing survival of P. hermaphrodita in different soil types and under different conditions. They also don’t like exposure to UV, so applying in the early morning or in the evening is recommended. How To Apply Slug Nematodes Slug Nematodes

Slug nematodes are microscopic, transparent worms, which feed and multiply inside the slug, once the nematodes are inside the slug it stops feeding after a few days and then dies within a week. The nematodes are already in the soil in the UK but just not enough for the number slugs, so effectively when applying slug nematodes we are just topping up the quantities. R. Krueger; K. E. Its all in the serotonin

The soil should be moist for 2 to 3 weeks after application to enable the nematodes to live. During dry spells watering may be necessary. Nearby will be evidence of their slime trials. They are particularly fond of succulent seedlings, which when left unprotected, can be totally destroyed in a single night. Some birds, frogs, toads, hedgehogs, slow-worms and ground beetles eat slugs and these predators should be encouraged in gardens Living in the UK, slugs are a continual battle that I felt like I was always losing. That is until I discovered slug nematodes. These invisible little things have controlled my slug problem, and they are entirely natural to boot. So what are they, how do they work, and how do you apply them? Let’s find out. Nematodes What Are Slug Nematodes? Nematodes can be applied in advance of expected damage, at sowing or any time during the crop’s lifetime. However, they are best applied in dull weather, in the evening and before rain. Success is dependent on wet conditions after application.

Our results suggest that by changing the levels of serotonin in healthy slugs, we can replicate the behavioural changes caused by P. hermaphrodita infection. Similarly, we can also reverse the behavioural changes of infected slugs to mimic uninfected members of their species. Several species and combinations of species can be available including, Steinernema kraussei, S. feltiae, Heterorhabditis megidis and H. bacteriophora. Steinernema species can remain active at soil temperatures down to 5ºC (41ºF) whilst Heterorhabditis require temperatures above 12ºC (54ºF). Kavlie, RG; Kernan, MJ; Eberl, DF (May 2010). Apply to moist soil. The soil temperature should be 5ºC (40ºF) or over (this is also when plants start to grow). Nematodes are capable of surviving the odd frost, so don’t worry if the temperature falls after you have applied Nemaslug. Reduced Chemical Usage In 2022 a new classification of the entire phylum Nematoda was presented by M. Hodda. It was based on current molecular, developmental and morphological evidence.
