About this deal

After a stagecoach carrying Government Gold is robbed the Cavalry learn from Joe Barlow (Dan Duryea), a reb convict, that the gold was hidden in land which is now in the middle of Indian treaty territory which is off limits to soldiers. It is why Captain Matt Martin (Robert Fuller) and a small group of plain clothes cavalry men along with Joe head in to the Indian country to recover the hidden gold. Along the way in Hays City they find themselves forced to take woman of ill repute, Memphis (Jocelyn Lane) with them and then they find themselves not only having to deal with the Apaches who don't appreciate them entering their territory but some outlaws who are also after the Gold. The second half disappointed me with the implausible tactics against the Indians, and other implausible situations. One good example is when the hero and a few stragglers are left without guns and horses in the wastelands, and are surrounded by Indians. Their solution: create a barn fire and surround the fire with the dead white bodies. Thinking they are live whites, the Indians rush to the fire and shoot the dead bodies with arrows. Meanwhile the few live whites happened to be situated where they can jump down on and overpower (silently!) the few Indians guarding the Indian horses. The whites flee on some Indian horses and stampede away the other horses! Stephen Colbert Forced To Cancel 'The Late Show' This Week After Undergoing Surgery For Ruptured Appendix

Claude Akins has a rather bizarre role as an Indian hating brute who has sworn to kill 10 apiece for his slain wife and his child and is rapidly closing in on his goal. He carries around a small music box that reminds him of his lost loved ones. Of course, everyone on this trip seems damaged in some way. Incident at Phantom Hill is directed by Earl Bellamy and jointly adapted to screenplay by Frank Nugent and Ken Pettus from a story by Harry Tatelman. It stars Robert Fuller, Jocelyn Lane, Dan Duryea, Tom Simcox, Linden Chiles, Claude Akins and Noah Beery Jr. A Techniscope/Technicolor production, music is by Hans J. Salter (Joseph Gershenson supervising) and cinematography is by William Margulies. Robert Fuller stars as intrepid Captain Matt Martin in this stunning western caper teeming with action, heist movie intrigue and the edgy twists of film noir. Dan Duryea as Joe Barlow, the man who agrees to lead a small detail to the gold in Incident at Phantom Hill (1966)It's a roll call of fine Western character actors, with the square jawed Fuller leading off on alpha male duties, behind him Akins (Comanche Station), Duryea (Winchester '73) and Noah Beery Jr (Decision At Sundown) lift the standard plot formula to better heights; further enhanced by the appearance of Denver Pyle (Fort Massacre) in a deliciously vile secondary villain role. But this gold has been hidden deep in Indian territory so Martin and the four men who volunteer to accompany him will have to shed their uniforms and pretend to be civilians. Eventually, after the gold is located, the rebel gets one of the group drunk, kills him and steals his gun. He kills another man, then escapes with the group's weaponry, the wagon filled with the gold, and the woman. The remaining men, without guns, must again face the Comanche. After this confrontation, only the captain and one other remain alive. They set off in pursuit of the rebel.

Disgraced 'Southern Charm' Alum Thomas Ravenel Fuming Over Craig Conover And Shep Rose's Kathryn Dennis Compliments at BravoCon 2023: "Total Losers" Cast wise Fuller turns in a lead performance of some macho substance, further begging the question on why he didn't have a more rewarding career? Duryea (was he ever bad in a film?) is restrained yet very effective as a grinning viper in the nest, while Akins, Beery and Pyle leave favourable impressions. Simcox, however, is underwritten and Chiles is just poor and suffers in comparison to those around him. Lane was always going to be up against it as the sole female character, it is a token lady role and she isn't much of an actress. But she positively sizzles with sexuality and delivers what the makers were calling for in the story. A sight for sore eyes to be sure, particularly when wearing an hour glass green dress. Although Nugent did not write Stagecoach (1939), Incident at Phantom Hill lifts several plot motifs from the earlier Ford western. As in Stagecoach the characters are western archetypes - including a prostitute with a heart of gold run out of town – placed on a journey through rough terrain that both tests their moral fortitude and exposes their true selves, for better and worse. Indeed a case can be made that Jocelyn Lane's sultry saloon gal Memphis (a cut-and-paste for Claire Trevor's Dallas) is the key character given the finale hinges on her making the right choice. Lane, a sensual presence, smoulders quite magnificently in clingy dresses barely period appropriate but also exudes palpable strength as a woman used to enduring injustice. Elsewhere Robert Fuller essays a blandly conventional square-jawed hero. When he isn't grimacing he’s growling at Lane despite an obvious attraction. On the plus side the filmmakers had the good sense to surround Fuller with a rich panoply of talented cowboy character actors including slippery Dan Duryea (good as always despite inhabiting the same oily goon he’s played a dozen times before), injun-hating Claude Akins and ‘oirish’ Noah Beery Jr. While the film struggles to involve the viewer in a subplot concerning Martin’s burning need to solve the mystery of his fallen brother the other story strands show promise yet are frustratingly undeveloped. Unlike Ford, Budd Boetticher, Anthony Mann or Howard Hawks, Earl Bellamy simply serves up action like a capable ringmaster and otherwise squanders the story's dramatic potential. Having said that there are worse things to be than simply entertaining and Jocelyn Lane is always worth watching. I was hoping for a good Western. The early parts gave hope, and there were many well written lines. Stream It Or Skip It: 'Holiday Road' on Hallmark, Where Nine Strangers Come Together for an Unforgettable Christmas RoadtripThe story involves a Union gold shipment, which is stolen and buried in the desert. Both Union and rebel forces struggle to find it while threatened by the Comanche. A romance complicates the action. At the end of the Civil War, Captain Matt Martin accepts a perilous covert mission to retrieve a million dollars in gold stolen from a Union regiment during a deadly ambush at Phantom Hill – the massacre where his officer- brother died. The catch - to find the gold, Martin must accept the dubious help of the murderous convict who led the Confederate rebels. Played with venomous abandon by the ever- charming Dan Duryea, Barlow starts off deceptively innocent. After trying unsuccessfully to jump off a train and elude Martin, he settles in for the long, conniving haul.
